AR Enhanced Plant Care App

Sapling is a mobile app designed for helping users care for and learn more about their plants. I came up with this idea when I was struggling to care for one of my own plants and it ended up dying. I felt that it would be helpful for me and other people who want to keep plants but struggle with plant care to have an app act as their assistant. I began working on concepting this idea through Figma and it led to the first stages of my project.

In my Interaction Design class DMA217, we were supposed to make an app that utilized AR. This was a good opportunity for me to enhance my current app design. With only a few screens made already, I used this idea and finished the rest as my class project, creating a prototype with an AR feature to identity plants and issues with your plants. The final prototype had screens for a landing, logging in and creating an account, a dashboard, garden view for plants to keep track of, settings, and an AR video screen.

Coming up with my app concept was the easy part, what was hard was learning new parts of Figma that I wasn’t familiar with. Learning about animations and overlays for videos were difficult, and it took me a lot of time to figure it out.

A way to improve this concept would be to sketch out all my ideas more thoroughly on paper so that when I go to create my actual prototype I’ll have a clear idea of what to create so that I know upfront what Figma functions I need to use.

The submission itself would be much better with a well designed pitch for for the project. A bunch of slides meant for a presentation would help people viewing this project to really get the full idea of what it’s meant for and what its benefits are.
