Branding Project

This project was completed for my DMA212 class Professional Practices. Our goal was to work with an actual client to learn how to work on real world projects. For this project, my client was Buffalo Peace & Love, a local non-profit starting up that currently had no digital presence or branding. Their request was a logo and simple branding details such as a color palette and a logo. The final designs are above.

My process for creating this project began with searching for appropriate colors. This took some time but I chose colors based on inspiration given to me by the client. I then adjusted those colors to fit the mood of the brand and to have proper symbolism. The yellow accent is meant to represent peace, the pink represents love, and the blue being calming and friendly. The color scheme used is triadic, meaning three colors spaced evenly on the color wheel.

The fonts were chosen based on wanting to make the text appear open and welcoming. Sans serif fonts seemed best for this and so I went that direction. The specific fonts used were ones that paired well together and worked with the feel the client was looking for.

The logo design took the most time. It was challenging trying to incorporate everything the client wanted into a single logo. I started off by sketching out ideas in Procreate, which was flexible for creating design concepts by hand with a digital pencil. I then worked with those ideas and refined them into concepts I could present to the client. That was then edited to fit more of what the client was looking for. The final edits involved adjusting the colors to the correct palette, smoothening any lines, adding text, and creating the skyline to match the actual city of Buffalo.

The biggest thing I learned from this project was to budget my time well when working with clients. Better time management would give me more time to get everything done by the set deadline. It would also allow for more communication with the client. I think the more I do client work the more I will get an idea of how fast I can work and how much time I should allow myself for working on projects.
