Project 1: Layout

What did you learn?

In this project, I learned how to apply gestalt principles to arrange basic shapes in a way that conveys a message. I also learned how to use a grid and the rule of thirds to optimize focal point position.

What was easy?

I found using Figma to be easy; once I had a clear idea of how to portray each line using gestalt principles, it was easy to execute that vision using the tools in Figma.

What was challenging?

It was challenging to come up with a way to clearly portray each line of the nursery rhyme while also making sure to incorporate six different gestalt principles.

How could your submission be improved?

I’m not sure that I like how frames 2 and 4 both use arrows to illustrate continuation and direct viewers’ eyes to the focal point. I might try using a different means of illustrating upward/downward continuation in one of these frames to improve my submission.

How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?

I thought that the assignment worked well as is, so I would not change anything for the next class.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

In future assignments or work scenarios, I now know how to optimize placement of design elements by using a grid and the rule of thirds, and I know to avoid certain design crimes like tangents. This will help me to work more efficiently in the future.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

The assigned reading from Steven Bradley on the principles of gestalt was helpful to refer back to for descriptions and visual examples of the principles.
