Project 1: Layout

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Frame 1: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star- The Gestalt Principles that I used are proximity and similarity. The smaller star at the top of the frame is distanced from the 6 bigger stars at the bottom, making it a focal point because it stands out compared to the similarity of the 6 bigger stars lined up at the bottom of the frame.

Frame 2: How I wonder what you are- The Gestalt Principles I used are similarity and continuation. The similarity and continuation of the small circles leading to the big star, that is supposed to represent the dot in a question mark, making it the focal point as it stands out from the smaller circles.

Frame 3- Up above the world so high- The Gestalt Principles that I used are proximity and continuation. The proximity and continuation of the small star from the Earth makes the small star the focal point since its distance and the arrows are what immediately grabs the viewers attention since the arrows are practically showing the viewer what to look at.

Frame 4- Like a diamond in the sky- The Gestalt Principle that I used is proximity. The proximity of the diamond compared to the clouds at the bottom of the frame is what draws the attention to the diamond, making it the focal point in this frame.

Frame 5: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star- The Gestalt Principles that I used are proximity and similarity. The smaller star at the top of the frame is distanced from the 6 bigger stars at the bottom, making it a focal point because it stands out compared to the similarity of the 6 bigger stars lined up at the bottom of the frame.

Frame 6: How I wonder what you are- The Gestalt Principles I used are similarity and continuation. The similarity and continuation of the small circles leading to the big star, that is supposed to represent the dot in a question mark, making it the focal point as it stands out from the smaller circles.

REFLECTION:

  1. What did you learn?– For this project, I learned about the Gestalt principles including proximity, similarity, closure, and continuation. Previous to this class I have seen some certain concepts such as closure or continuation in logos or symbols, including the Adidas or AT&T logos, however I was not aware that Gestalt principles were involved in the designing of those logos.
  2. What was easy? One of the easiest parts of this project was using continuation or proximity in my project because I feel that it helps the focal point stand out the most compared to closure or similarity. Additionally, I think the nursery rhyme I chose was rather easy so coming up with a sketch was not difficult and I almost immediately was able to come up with the frames for each line in “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” while using Gestalt principles.
  3. What was challenging? One of the most challenging parts of this project was not being able to use any other shapes other than rectangles, lines, arrows, ellipses, polygons, and stars. The other most challenging thing of this project was trying to figure out other Gestalt principles to use besides continuation and proximity and still be able to tell the story while making a focal point stand out in each frame.
  4. How could your submission be improved? My submission could be improved by trying to incorporate more Gestalt principles into each frame or making the designs/scenes more detailed.
  5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class? I feel this assignment was rather straightforward and I felt that I had all the tools I needed to complete this project successfully without feeling too challenged, its also a good starter project for people who have never used figma.
  6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios? If I happen to work for a company as a designer than I will have the knowledge of the Gestalt principles and try and incorporate what I learned into whatever I am tasked to design to make it stand out as much as possible.
  7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you? https://www.creativebloq.com/graphic-design/gestalt-theory-10134960

This reading helped me through their explanations of the principles, I was able to use what I learned about gestalt principles in your class and this reading in my designs to use each principle the right way to tell a story.
