Project 1

Gestalt Nursery Rhyme

The nursery rhyme I chose to represent in Gestalt principles is “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”. My art board illustrates the story of this nursery rhyme using abstract elements to portray each scene.

1: Repetition

The pattern of circles represent repetition with their alignment and uniform size.

2: Anomaly

The rain drop in the right corner of the frame depicts proximity because of its location in comparison to the rest of the rain drops.

3: Common Fate

The half circle shapes show common fate because they create a downward slope to represent the spider being washed out.

4: Figure/Ground

The sun is in the background of the scene which represents the ground principle.

5: Positive/Negative Space

The raindrop is constructed of positive and negative space with the layers of shapes.

6: Similarity

The circles display similarity because they are the same shapes but different sizes and colors.

What did I learn?

I learned about the complexities of the Gestalt principles and how they can be used to enhance many designs. I also learned about how noticing and altering things that violate design crimes can make your designs more complex and interesting.

What was easy?

The easiest part of this project was determining what Gestalt principles I was going to implement into each scene.

What was challenging?

The most challenging part for me was giving up my own preferences of symmetry and uniformity in order to learn new ways to make designs more interesting and intricate.

How could my submission be improved?

My submission could be improved by taking my designs to even more extreme values. I think I could’ve challenged myself to think outside of the designs I already created to expand my creative ability.

How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?

I think the assignment was constructed well and challenged the class to learn new design concepts and implement them with their own creativity.

How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

Learning the Gestalt principles will help me have a guideline for my future products to enhance my work with more interesting techniques.

How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

I used youtube to find new ways to use Figma to enhance the designs I was always making.

In creating Project 1, I learned how to implement the Gestalt principles to portray a storyline in an abstract form. I was forced to challenge my own creative abilities and think outside of the norm when constructing each scene of the nursery rhyme.
