Tom Colgan Project 2: Business Card / Personal Brand

1. What did you learn?

While working on this project, I learned how to use the “invisible squares” method, which allowed me to center my monogram on the left side of my business card. I also learned, through many failed attempts, how to make my letters overlap cleanly and remove the lines where they intersected. This allowed me to make the letters flow together cleanly, rather than just stacking one on top of the other and calling it a day.

2. What was easy?

The easiest part of this project for me was using the invisible squares method in order to line up my monogram and my text on the other side of the card. The method really tidies up the card and makes an invisible border for the text to sit up against, making it more appealing to the eye than if it were uncentered.

3. What was challenging?

The most challenging part of the project was filling in the “T” with green while retaining the black outline. I had to delete the inside border of the letter outline in the rearmost “T” layer, and then fill it with green. I locked the black “T” outline in front, so it would still be visible and show the green fill inside it.

4. How could your submission be improved?

My submission could have been improved if I had found a better way to combine my initials “TC.” I had a pretty difficult time trying to combine them since they are comprised of very different shapes. If my first initial had more curves in it, I feel as if this would have made my job much easier, and may have provided for a higher quality monogram on the business card.

5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?

I think the instructions for this project were very straightforward, so I don’t think there is much that the professor needs to improve. One thing that could be improved would be giving more students feedback on their work during class time.

6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

I can definitely apply my knowledge of making a business card to my future career as either an athletic trainer or physical therapist. With practice, I can improve upon my design and even help other people with their questions about making business cards for their own businesses.
