Project One

Question One: What did you learn?

  • This was not my first time doing a project like this, so I didn’t learn anything especially new. That being said, I generally learned more about gestalt principles and the rule of thirds in regards to graphic design for this project which made the end product significantly more refined. One new thing I learned how to use in Illustrator was the ‘pathfinders’ tool which inverts colors of overlapping areas of two or more shapes, that was a very cool tool that I can see it has many different applications.

Question Two: What was easy?

  • I think that this project was relatively easy for most of the artboards. I tried to go for a more minimalist design in the abstract part, and a more surreal aesthetic in the representative part.

Question Three: What was challenging?

  • Abstractism and surrealism are heavy inspirations for my personal aesthetics and I find them especailly similar(even more so within the constraints of this project), so I had some trouble doing a more “representitive” version of the story. this just led to me using more complex shapes and designs which I think had the effect I was going for.
  • easily the two hardest artboards to design were “Jack fell down” and “Jill came tumbling after,” because those two are so similar and I was having trouble making them unique and interesting. This was mostly only a problem in the abstract section though.

Question Four: How could your submission be improved?

  • With digital art and art in general, I like to keep critiquing my work to try and always be able to improve a piece more to keep making them as high quality as I am able to. But I am also a slow worker, and these two qualities don’t like to agree with deadlines and due dates. But given an extra week or two, I am sure I would be able to find plenty of areas to continually improve.

Question Five: How can I improve the assignment for the next class?

  • Well you see, I am posting this 4 days after the last day of critiques, so there isn’t much I could do. but still, I can always go back and make this more detailed.

Question Six: How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

  • I will always keep trying new designs and aesthetics to make a project or comission for a person or company as pleasing to the eye as possible. I’m very glad that the perfectionist part of me was put into art and design because I am so passionate about art and art culture(obviously).

Question Seven: How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

  • I really enjoyed the reading on Gestalt principles. There wasn’t any video or article specifically that inspired me, I know this sounds cheesy but honestly just looking at cool art, different aesthetics, or breathtaking architecture inspires me a lot with my own art.
