Through this project I learned how to create an image that can convey a metaphor, specifically using Gimp and Figma.
Personally, I found that the easiest part of the project was planning out how I would portray the metaphor I had chosen. I actually had a few different ideas for a couple of different metaphors, but ended up going with this one.
The most challenging part of this project was using Gimp and Figma as I am still fairly new to those programs, so I am still pretty awkward with them. I was especially struggling with the plugin that we were recommended to use to create our pattern, so I ended up just creating my pattern myself.
I think my submission could be improved by possibly adding some shadows. I feel as though the image of the book looks awkward against the background. Also, I feel like the pattern in the back is hidden by the foreground image, so I maybe should adjust that more so its showing.
In order to improve the assignment for the next class, I feel like I should just continue to play around with the image. See how I can alter it to make it appear less awkward.
The knowledge that I learned through this project, such as creating a pattern and just using Gimp in general, can very well be used in future assignments or work scenarios. This is because patterns are used quite often in digital design and also continuing to learn about Gimp will ultimately lead to me becoming more skilled in my editing abilities.
Rather than a specific reading or video, what really inspired me for this project was seeing what my classmates had submitted and the feedback that was given to them.
Through this project I further learned how to create an image using Figma as well as creating cohesive images using specific color schemes.
Personally, what I found to be easy during this project was figuring out the color schemes I would be using. This is because I feel like we’ve been practicing with color for quite a while now.
I think the most challenging aspect of this project for me was trying to create dimension within the landscapes. Even though I tried to alter the darkness of some layers, it still comes across as two dimensional. Another thing I tend to struggle with is tangents because it is a new concept to me so they tend to just slip right by me.
I think my submission could be improved by changing some of the colors I used for certain color schemes because I noticed in all four landscapes I used the color orange. Also, I think the spacing on the extraterrestrial landscape could be better, however every time I tried to alter it, it still looked off.
I could improve the assignment for the next class by continuing to practice with Figma so I am more comfortable with the program.
The knowledge I gained during this project will be useful very frequently as I believe color schemes are very important in any aspect of art/design, so it is a very useful skill to have.
Throughout this project I actually watched a few videos on color schemes and it inspired me to decide which type of color scheme I would be using for each landscape.
Little Jack Horner Sat in the corner, Eating his Christmas Pie; He put in his thumb, And pulled out a plum, And said, “What a good boy am I!”
Through our first project I learned how to convey a story through both abstract design as well as a more realistic approach as well as the importance of symmetry and tangent lines.
I think that the easiest part of the project was deciding how I wanted to design the story and what symbols I would use to do so.
The most challenging part was being aware of tangent lines, as I often tend to forget about them. Also, Figma is still a fairly new program for me, so just figuring out how to work on it could be difficult at times.
I think my submission could be improved upon by trying to use a wider variety of symbols,. And of course I’m sure there are some issues with tangents that I have overlooked, that could be improved upon.
I think I could improve the assignment for the next class by, as I mentioned in #4, just being more aware of tangents.
I keep mentioning it, but being aware of tangents is really important in design, so just having practice with it and becoming more aware could be very helpful in the future.
Rather than a reading or video, what really inspired me for this project was the lectures and being able to see what my classmates were able to come up with. Through that I was able to pick up a few tricks that I utilized during this project.
