1. What did you learn?

In this project, I learned how to use HTML/CSS to design a basic website. During the process, I understood how to resize different elements and forms on each page. Understanding how HTML and CSS work is critical, despite the limits that CSS has.

2. What was easy?

For the most part, the HTML portion of this project was simple. Since I had experience using this language in another class, I was familiar with some of the tags and indentation styles.

3. What was challenging?

The CSS part of this project was tricky in getting the positioning and layout of objects to conform to each page. Even though I used this language in the past, getting elements to line up properly was challenging and time-consuming. While I like learning about CSS, it takes a long time to master and become proficient in each concept. For instance, I had a lot of problems with my media query and also getting a masonry Javascript plugin to work for my Portfolio page. As a side note, I was unsure of how each page could fit different screen sizes. For instance, my Portfolio page looks fine on a 24″ monitor but is off-centered on my 15″ Macbook Pro screen.

4. How could your submission be improved

If I had more time, I would continue to work on the Masonry portion and see if I could get something to work, as well as rewrite the media query so that the mobile version of the website displays correctly on smaller screens. I would also fix the calibration so that each page displays the same on all screen sizes. Overall, this was definitely not my best work.

5. How could I improve the assignment next class?

I would continue to use HTML/CSS for this project, but I would spend more time talking about the media queries as this was the core portion of the assignment that I didn’t fully understand.

6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

This knowledge of HTML/CSS can apply to jobs in the web design and web development industry, areas that combine Digital Media and Computer Science. From this Project, I learned more CSS and advanced techniques to make web pages look clean and functional.

7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

For this assignment, I was inspired by an article that talked about different web design concepts. Although I was unable to implement most of these into my project, I learned the possibilities that HTML/CSS offers despite being standard languages. While the article is old, these concepts still apply to the web industry today and showcase fundamental techniques that can enhance one’s website.
