Project 4- Infographics

The location I chose to recreate is my hometown of Batavia, NY. Since I live in this general side of the city, I am able to jet right over to DeWitt park during any free time. This is my favorite place in Batavia since there is not much to do!
I began with creating the area using the color palette from lab 7. Next I created the Three main roads (pink) and a few side streets (white). Using what we learned in previous labs, I was able to combined all of the techniques to create project 4.

Once I completed the area and roads, I made various different symbols to represent in the legend. The symbols I created are headstones for the cemetery, pizza for the local Italian/pizza restaurants, trees for parks, (A+) to represent schools, shopping bags to depict where a store is, and glasses to represent the local library.
I then was able to create a legend, a compass, and a scale to help give an idea about the area to people who may not be from around there. To add a finishing touch, using knowledge from lab 8, I was able to create a banner for the city of Batavia.

Project Questions:

1. What did you learn?

I learned how to duplicate a map from google maps to make an info-graph on my selected area, in particular Batavia.

2. What was easy? 3. What was challenging?

Some parts of the project were easier than others. The easy parts of the project was completing the banner, scale, and compass. The challenging park was creating the lines in the roads and properly aligning everything based on where it is in real life. Another challenge was creating a symbol for the different locations on the map.

4. How could your submission be improved?

My project could defiantly be improved. The strokes of my lines could be cleaned up by making them more soft and not have sharp edges. My symbols could also be improved.

5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?

I do not think there needs to be anything changed in particular. It was a straight forward project and was fun to work on since students are allowed to pick where ever they want, or create their own fantasy map.

6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?

I will be able to apply my knowledge in the future for every project I work on. From lab 1 to the latest lab, I acquired skills I did not have before and learned new techniques. I will be able to use this new knowledge for each and everyone of my ongoing projects.

7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?

I begin with creating my map in a little town in Italy, where I have wanted to travel. As I went home this weekend, I realized that no matter where I want to live in life, my family is always going to be in Batavia and it will always be my home. I decided to scrap my original project and base my new idea on my home area.
