Typography Lab 1

I am already realizing that there is a lot more that goes into typography than would appear on first glance. It takes into account the thickness of characters, spacing between them, roughness or smoothness, and much more. I realized while messing around in Illustrator that there are tools which allow a creator to make font fit their specific needs. I took this picture of a furniture store in down town Buffalo. I believe that is Helvetica. This has a very clean look to me, and I love how it goes in different directions. The color of this text also blends really well with the blue on the rundown building.

2D Graphics Project 4

1. What did you learn?
– This project employed many separate techniques. I used the pen tool to create many of the roads and different areas. I discovered some new uses that come along with the text tool in illustrator.
2. What was easy?
– I enjoyed creating the roads. Throughout the year I have become a lot more comfortable with the pen tool, this was the perfect way to apply that.
3. What was challenging?
– I had trouble creating some of the symbols for the map. Since some of my symbols were made up of separate objects they became disproportional at certain sizes. This caused me some trouble throughout.
4. How could your submission be improved?
– I was not fully satisfied with my color scheme. This was something I spent a long time on to no avail. Often I would start to run into contrast with all of the different elements.
5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?
– I think it could be an interesting idea if there was a lab prior to this project concerned with making some of the symbols for the map.
6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
– These skills would be great when trying to create artistic information. This is something there is a high demand for, being able to create something that is eye catching but also relays information in a simple efficient way.
7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?
– I looked a couple of maps online. I also watched the posted video of an “infographic critique”

2D Graphics Lab 6

1. What did you learn?
– This lab covered a lot of stuff that I was unfamiliar with in adobe illustrator.
2. What was easy?
– Creating an image trace of the original logo image was an easy step. This created a pretty good vector image though there were some rough spots that had to be altered.

– These would be very useful techniques to know If you are creating or changing a logo. Really anytime you want to turn an image into an editable illustrator file this will be relevant.
7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?
– The slides did a great job walking through this assignment. I also again referred to youtube on this one for some quick tool tutorials.

2D Graphics Lab 5

1. What did you learn?
– This lab worked with vector graphics in figma. I have not had a ton of time with figma so I get more comfortable with the tools every time.
2. What was easy?
– Figma makes it very easy to resize items like my clouds and make sure they are centered with one another. This is awesome when your trying to have a clean look.
3. What was challenging?
– I have always found that It can start to be a little bit difficult to keep track of all of the individual items as the frame fills up. I should practice better naming/grouping
4. How could your submission be improved?
– I was not completely satisfied with my clouds. Perhaps I should’ve tried a different method for creating them.
5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?
– Perhaps a few examples of what the other frames could have looked like
6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
– This was great practice using figma. This can be used to make clean vector images from scratch and is a great alternative to illustrator.
7. How did a specific reading or video inspire or help you?
– I could not find a tool I needed in figma so I referred to the internet for that issue.

2D Graphics Project 2

1. What did you learn?
– In this lab we created a background for a desktop. To create the finish product I learned a lot about layer masks that I had not known.
2. What was easy?
– It was not to hard to create the background using methods we had learned. It took me a while to finally pick one but its very intuitive and there are countless options.
3. What was challenging?
– I found it hard to think of a good lay out for the three images I was using. It took me a long time shuffling them around and arranging to get it looking decent.
4. How could your submission be improved?
– About halfway through the project I wished I had chosen a different image. The two hard square images do not contrast with each other well that Is why I tried to alter the edges on them.
5. How could the professor improve the assignment for the next class?
– I had trouble deciding what art direction I wanted to take with this. It was helpful going through and looking at some examples from precious classes.
6. How might you apply your knowledge in future assignments or work scenarios?
– This was a great practice using adobe photoshop tools. I could see all of this being relevant if you were creating social media/advertisements for a company.
